Nike Cross Nationals


The boys went to Portland, Oregon this weekend for the Nike Cross Nationals.
They ended their amazing season with a 2nd place finish on what was the wettest, muddiest course in NXN history. They scored 122 points, only 14 behind champion Arcadia, California.
Brayden McLelland earned 2nd team All-America  with an 8th place finish (2nd scoring).
Connor McMillan earned 3rd team All-American with a 19th place finish(8th scoring).
Zac Jacklin placed 38th overall (20th scoring).
Caleb Thompson placed 72nd overall (44th scoring).
Tyson Green placed 78th overall (48th scoring), and won the Anchor Award for being the first fifth man in from any team.
Tyler Bell placed 100th overall (62nd scoring).
Spencer Herzog placed 115th (77th scoring).
22 teams and 45 individuals qualifying from 9 regions around the U.S. participated.

NXN-SW Results



The Cavemen came, saw, and conquered.
The Cavemen came down to Mesa, Arizona to compete at the Southwest Nike Regional Cross-Country Championships.
The boys won for the 4th straight year with a record 36 points in a team record 76:12, 90 seconds faster than their team record set last year, and reported by XCNATION to be the 4th fastest 5k XC team time in US high school history.
Brayden McLelland was 1st team all-region -6th place in 15:03.
Connor McMillan and Tyson Green were 2nd team all-region in 15:09 (9th) and 15:11 (11th), respectively.
Zac Jacklin and Caleb Thompson were 3rd team all-region in 15:21 (16th) and 15:25 (20th), respectively.
Spencer Herzog placed 51st in 15:42, and Tyler Bell placed 79th in 15:59.
All 7 boys ran personal records.
Davis was 2nd with 163 points out of 33 teams 280 total competitors.
The boys will now compete on December 1st at Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Oregon.
The girls went down to Mesa for the first time since 2009 and placed 9th overall.
They set a school record team time of 93:29 for the 5000 meter course (18:41 avg.).

Nike Southwest Regionals


A week from today is Nike Southwest Regionals in Mesa, Arizona. Our boys and girls varsity teams will be competing in the Championship races for an opportunity to qualify for the Nike Cross Nationals two weeks later in Portland, Oregon. The boys have won Regionals the past three years and are currently ranked #1 in the Southwest. The girls placed 7th at NXN-SW in their only trip in 2009, and are currently ranked 10th in the Southwest.

We will be holding our team awards banquet this Thursday, November 8th in the AFHS Cafeteria at 6:00 PM. Food assignments are being made. If you don't receive one, contact Mrs. McLelland or one of the team captains.

Reminder: Remaining Footlocker West money is due this week. Please make sure you have registered for your races and have obtained a valid USATF membership card (required).

We will be beginning our Footlocker fundraiser today after school. Mrs. Lott from D & J services will be here to hand out order forms and explain procedures.

State Championships Results

Yesterday was a great day for the Cavemen.
At 2:00 PM, the girls race started.
Before 2:20 came around, all 7 Lady Cavemen had passed the finish line.
They had run a  95:01  team time which is 6th all-time in the State of Utah, and a school record by 50 seconds.
We had two all-staters: Emily Orton was 9th in 18:52.8 (2nd all-time at AFHS) and Maddie Bench was 10th in 18:53.9(3rd all-time at AFHS).
Also scoring were Sophie Baird, 12th in 19:01.2(7th all-time at AFHS), Makayla Stepp, 13th in 19:01.6(8th all-tine at AFHS), and Diane Leach, 17th in 19:12.1(11th all-time at AFHS).
Katie Cornell placed 21st in 19:33.8(18th all-time at AFHS), and Lexie Green placed 23rd in 19:37.6(21st all-time at AFHS).
The Lady Cavemen earned the school's third Runner-Up trophy; only 14 points behind winner Davis.

AT 3:30 PM, the boys took off. Literally.
The boys won their 4th straight State Championship, scoring 29 points.
Their team time of 78:17.6 was 2nd fastest All-Time behind the 2010 AF team (78:01).
The team was led by Brayden McLelland, Individual Runner-up with a school and 5A Senior Class record 15:18.1.
He was followed in 4th place by Connor McMillan with a 15:30.7 (6th all-time at AFHS).
Next came Tyson Green in 5th place with a time of 15:36.1 (10th all-time at AFHS).
Zac Jacklin was our 4th all-stater, placing 7th in 15:45.1 (12th all-time at AFHS).
Rounding out the team scoring was Caleb Thompson in 11th place in 16:07.6 (22nd all-time at AFHS).
Spencer Herzog added points to the other teams' scores with a 13th place finish in 16:09.3 (24th all-time at AFHS).
Tyler Bell finished up the Cavemen runners, crossing the line in 32nd place in 16:41.3.

The Varsity boys and girls now prepare for the Nike Southwest Regionals on November 17th in Mesa, Arizona. Qualifying JV athletes are preparing for Footlockerwest in Walnut, California the first weekend in December.

The Grinder

We failed to mention that last Monday, Caleb Thompson became the second Caveman this season to break 8:00 up the Grinder with a 7:48 clocking and earn a new pair of spikes. Daniel Bentley became the latest Caveman to earn his Grinder shirt by running 8:57. Congratulations to both!

Utah State XC Championships

This coming Wednesday, the Cavemen will participate at the Utah State Cross-Country Championships at Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City. Take I-80 eastbound to the 13th East exit. Turn left onto 21st South. You may have to park at Highland High School.

The girls will race at 2:00 PM and the boys will race at 3:30 PM.

The bus will leave AFHS at 12:15 PM (Jr. High released at 11:45)

Afterward, the team is going to Chuck-A-Rama. J.V. runners should bring $14 for the meal. Varsity runners will have their meal provided.

The Cavemen hosted the Region IV Cross-Country Championships today at AFHS.

Westlake Invite

On Thursday, the Cavemen went to Westlake High School to participate in the 3rd Annual Westlake Cross Country Invitational.
The girls varsity team won their competition with 25 points over Bingham's 51.
The boys varsity race saw the Cavemen top 7 JV place 3rd overall.
The girls JV team won their race, while the boys JV placed 2nd without their top 7.

Westlake Invite this Thursday

This week the Cavemen will be running at the Westlake HS Invite on Thursday afternoon.
The bus will leave AFHS at 2:30. Jr. High athletes will be excused at 2:00 PM
All athletes must ride up on the bus to participate.

Nebo Invitational Boys Results

Just like the girls, the boys had a record breaking afternoon Friday at the Nebo XC Invite. The flat, grass 3.25 mile course saw many personal records for the Cavemen.

The Boys Varsity team won with 29 points, followed by Bonneville with 70, and Lone Peak with 114, and 24 total teams. Their race might well have been the fastest team race in Utah history. The Cavemen ran a 5 man cumulative 3-mile converted time of 75:04 (15:01 average). Using the NCAA conversion table, that would be a 14:39 average at sea-level! HOLY MOLY!!!!!

It was a record breaking Friday night for the Cavemen at the Nebo XC Invite, held at Salem Hills High School. The course was measured at 3.25 miles. It was sunny and warm on the flat, grass course.

The Nebo Invite will be held this Friday at Salem Hills High School.

The bus will leave AFHS at 2:00 PM. Students will be excused from class at AFHS and the Jr. Highs at 1:30 PM. Athletes must ride the bus to SHHS to participate. Parents can take their athletes home after their team cooldown if you notify their coach.

The first to publish is Milesplit.com which moved the Cavemen boys up to #8 in their rankings released today.
The girls team is also in the Milesplit national rankings for the first time this season. They are in the Honorable Mention list

This Weekend's Information

On Friday, the boys and girls varsity teams will be racing at the BYU Autumn Classic. The races will be held in conjunction with BYU collegiate races at Cascade Golf Course, 1300 E. 800 N. in Orem. There is a spectator fee of $5. The bus will leave AFHS at 3:30 PM The schedule of races goes as following:
  5:00 pm Collegiate Men's 4 Mile
  5:30 pm Girl's Invitational 5K
  6:00 pm Collegiate Women's 4 Mile
  6:30 pm Boy's Invitational 5K

On Saturday, The girls JV will race at the BYU track South of Lavell Edwards Stadium. The top seven JV girls will be racing in the Varsity race to get high level race experience. There is a spectator fee of $5. The bus will leave AFHS at 8:00 AM. Athletes must ride the bus to BYU in order to race.

We took the JV boys and girls to Orem this morning for the Utah County Invite, hosted by Timpanogos High School. It was nice and cool from the early morning rain. The grass field had a few muddy spots, but was flat and fast, measured at 3.00 miles.

American Fork Grass Relays Results

Perfect weather help make Saturday a great day for the Cavemen at their own Grass Relays. We had 1300 from 30 teams compete in the 17th edition of this event. Many of our athletes ran faster over the hay than they did at their time time trials earlier in the month.

Lexie Green won in a stellar time of 12:29 on the 2 mile course.

The Varsity 5X2 mile relay races came next and turned out to be very special for the Cavemen.
First was the Girls Relay with 24 teams. The Lady Cavemen finished in 4th place to earn a trophy, running 64:08 which was 12th best all-time, and 2 minutes faster than the school record which was set by the 2009 State Champions.
The relay team consisted of:
Emily Orton, 12:46, then Sophie Baird, 12:55, then Diane Leach, 13:08, then Makayla Stepp, 12:25 (8th fastest overall), and anchoring, Maddie Bench, 12:54.

The Boys Varsity Relay had 25 teams competing. Spectators saw all five Cavemen win awards. They also won the first place team trophy with a 22 second relay record in 51:46. Lead-off leg was team captain Brayden McLelland with a split of 10:15 (3rd on the day,14th all-time). He gave the crew a 2 second lead which stretched to 15 seconds after Caleb Thompson's (10th fastest) 10:25 split. Zac Jacklin (9th fastest) continued lengthening the lead to 29 seconds over nationally ranked rival Davis with his split of 10:25. Tyson Green (15th fastest) kept the lead , running 10:32, but Skyler Williams of Davis gained 7 seconds back until Connor McMillan closed the door with his 10:07 split (2nd on the day and 8th fastest all-time) to win by 47 seconds. The time by the Davis crew, 52:33, is 3rd fastest ever on the course.

We would like to thank the parent boosters for running registration, the concession stand, the results tent, and the finish chute. Special thanks to the team dads who helped us pick up the hay afterward. Also thanks to Frank and Quinn for helping us with our custodial needs.
