Nike Cross Nationals

The Girls will be attending the 11th Annual Nike Cross Nationals this coming week in Portland, Oregon. They won NXN-SW Regionals last week to earn an automatic berth. This will be their second year in a row competing at Nationals.

The Boys learned tonight that they had earned one of four at-large berths to attend NXN. They placed 4th at Regionals, but had one of the fastest team times in the Nation.

Nationals Information:
WHAT IS NXN?
The Nike Cross Nationals is comprised of 8 Regional Qualifying meets and the National Finals in Portland.  The new Nationals course at Glendoveer Golf Course will offer athletes a premium, challenging championship venue for putting it all on the line.
The course at Glendoveer offers spectators great viewing options whether they want to follow the race around the course or sit in the grandstands near the finish line.  For those not able to make the event in person, a live webcast feed of the event will run on nikecrossnationals.com
Fields of 22 7-person clubs and an additional 45 individuals (male and female) will lay it all on the line in the quest for the sport's biggest prize, the coveted Winged Goddess of Victory statue.

Final Grinder

The boys ran The Grinder for the final time of the season on Monday. Parker Barnes earned a pair of spikes by running 7:59. He is the 5th Cavemen this season to break 8:00, and the 25th overall.

NXN-SW Results

The Varsity teams ran last weekend at the Nike Cross Regional Championships in Casa Grande, Arizona.

Several members of the girls team ran in the Large School Open Division Race.

The Boys Varsity placed 4th overall in the Championship Race, only 13 points out of first.. Casey Clinger was the overall winner with a meet and course record 14:41.7 for 5000 m. It was sunny, dry, and 78 degrees. McKay Johns placed 19th overall (3rd Team All-Region) with a time of 15:18.5. Joe Simmons just missed being All-Region with a 24th place finish in 15:22.5. Hagen Harmer was 68th in 15:51.9, and Patrick Parker (coming back from pneumonia) placed 73rd in 15:57.6. Jason Manning and Patrick Larkin were 95th (16:06.6) and 227th (17:45.0), respectively. Their team time of 77:12 was the 3rd fastest ever at the Southwest Championships, only behind the AF times from 2012 and 2014.


The Girls Varsity placed 1st overall and earned a trip to Nike Cross Nationals next week. They had 59 points in front of 2nd place Xavier Prep from Arizona with 119 points. Their team time of 91:02 was the meet's 4th fastest ever. Sara Musselman earned 2nd Team All-Region with an 8th place finish in 17:43.7. Sophie Baird (15th in 18:05.4), Sammy Hollingsworth (16th in 18:06.0, and Cami Squires (21st in 18:16.8) all earned 3rd Team All-Region honors. Katie Cornell finished the team scoring with a 52nd place finish in 18:50.2.  Katie Bradshaw and Lacie Evans were 66th (19:02.0), and 82nd (19:16.4), respectively.

National Early Signing Day and NXN-SW

Last week, Katie Cornell signed a National Letter of Intent to run at Weber State University. Joe Simmons signed his NLI to run at Idaho State University. Congratulations to them both!



The Varsity Boys and Girls will participate this weekend in Casa Grande, Arizona at the Nike Cross Southwest Regional Championships. The Boys have won the last 6 NXN-SW meets. The Girls are the returning Regional Champions. Good luck this weekend!

UHSTCA Pre-Footlocker Invite Results

This morning the UHSTCA put on the UHSTCA Pre-Footlocker Invite at AFHS. It was 40 degrees, sunny, and calm. Thanks to all the coaches and parents who helped on the course and in the chute.
The course was 5000 meters (three 1-mile loops on the Grass Relays Course + .1 to the finish)

Cross-Country Banquet

We had a wonderful banquet tonight. We appreciate the work Mrs. Lamb and the parent boosters for all their work setting up the cafeteria, and Coach Hunziker for getting the Pizza Factory to cater the event.

The captains for the Girls Team were named for next year: Katy Phillippi, Katie Bradshaw, Bonnie Schellenberg, Sammy Hollingsworth, Sara Musselman, and Cami Squires.


The captains for the Boys Team were named for next year: Casey Clinger, Patrick Parker, and McKay Johns.

Team Banquet and other news

The Cross-Country Team Banquet will be held this Thursday at 6:00 PM at the AFHS Cafeteria. The Banquet is catered this year, so there will be a cost of $5 per person, to be paid at the Financial Window at AFHS. Team members will eat for free.

Congratulations to Mark Carlisle for earning his Grinder t-shirt yesterday. He made it in 8:52.

This Saturday is the UHSTCA Pre-Footlocker Invite, to be held at AFHS. Registration Begins at
7:30 AM with the girls running at 8:30 AM and the boys at 9:00 AM. Cost is $3 per athlete.
