Footlocker West Regionals

The Cavemen will be leaving this Thursday for the Footlocker West Regionals held at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California. Athletes need to be at AFHS at 5:45 to load the busses, which will depart at 6:00 AM. Athletes should dress in their running gear, for a run at lunchtime in St. George. Athletes need to remember to bring a photo ID for packet pickup on Friday.

Nike Southwest Regional Championships

The Boys and Girls Varsity teams will be heading to NXN-SW in Casa Grande, Arizona on Thursday. The 5000m races will be held at the Grande Sports Academy on Saturday. The races will include the top teams from Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada. The top two teams in each championship race will earn a berth to Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Oregon on December 2nd.

NCAA Mountain Region Results

The Cavemen had a few alumni race at the NCAA Mountain Regional Championships held today in Logan, Utah.

Sara Musselman placed 56th overall and 6th for BYU in 21:26 for the 6k course. BYU took 3rd place overall and will get an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships next week in Louisville, Ky.

Lexie (Green) Thompson placed 68th overall and 2nd for Weber State in 21:37. The Wildcats placed 11th as a team.

Sammy Hollingsworth placed 79th overall and 4th for UVU in 21:48. UVU placed 13th as a team.

Connor McMillan placed 4th in 30:17, Brayden McLelland 26th in 30:56, and Clayton Young in 27th in 31:03 to help BYU place 2nd as a team and get an auto-qualifier spot to Nationals next week. Casey Clinger was rested for Nationals.

Tyson Green was 51st overall and 2nd for Weber State in 31:39. WSU placed 10th as a team.

Joe Simmons was 79th overall and 3rd for Idaho State in in 32:34. ISU placed 13th as a team.

The Grinder

Congratulations to Luke Grundvig and Kooper Dibb.
Luke earned a pair of spikes for running 7:55 up The Grinder. He is the 2nd boy this season and the 28th in AFXC history to break 8:00.
Kooper Dibb earned his Grinder t-shirt by running 8:48. He is the 3rd Freshman to break 9:00 this season.

Pre-Footlocker Invite

The Utah High School Track Coaches Association will hold the 17th Annual pre-Footlocker Invite this Saturday at AFHS. Registration is $3 per athlete, and will take place from 7:30-8:30 AM. The Girls race will be at 8:30 AM, and the Boys Race at 9:00 AM. It will be on the 5000m AFHS course, so spikes are recommended.

Awards will be given to the top 30 finishers in each race.

The Grinder, The Banquet, and Other News

Congratulations to Mason McQuivey. He ran 8:55 up The Grinder yesterday to earn his Grinder t-shirt.

Our team banquet will be held this Wednesday, November 1st at 6:00 PM at the AFHS Cafeteria. Girls will be bringing salads, and boys will be bringing desserts. The coaches will be providing beverage and pizza.

Today, the Pie Lady (Mrs. Lott) will be at AFHS at 3:00 PM to kick off our fundraiser for Footlockerwest. Athletes will have 2 weeks to sell pies and get their orders in to Coach Mostert. The pies will be delivered on Tuesday, Nov. 21st.

Collegiate Conference Weekend

At the West Coast Conference, BYU won the Men's Division race with a perfect 15 points:

State Results

Two State trophies came home yesterday with the Cavemen!

The girls placed 2nd in the inaugural 6A State Championships race with a team time of 95:32. Lexi Wright earned both All-State and Academic All-State awards. The Girls finished only 15 points behind State Champs Pleasant Grove.

Utah State Championships

The Cavemen will race tomorrow at the Utah State XC Championships held at Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City (2100 S. 1500 E.). The bus will leave AFHS at 12:00 Noon. Jr. High Students are excused at 11:30 AM, and AFHS athletes at 11:45 AM. We will set up our camp on the usual spot on the south side of the creek. JV should bring $15 for dinner at Chuck-a-Rama  (400 S. 744 E.) after the meet. Varsity athletes will have their dinner paid for by the coaches.

Alumni Report

Several AFHS Alumni contributed to their team success this weekend.

At Pre-Nats, held in Louisville, Kentucky, 4 former Cavemen helped BYU win with only 41 points on the 8000m course:

Sara Musselman placed 3rd in the Women's 6K Black Race in 21:10 to help BYU's B-Team place 2nd.

Weber State finished 13th out of the 41 teams with the help of Tyson Green in 136th with a time of 24:46.

Joe Simmons placed 7th at the ISU Invite in Pocatello, Idaho. He ran 19:07 for the 5.6k course.

Sammy Hollingsworth placed 26th in 21:07 for 4th place UVU in the 6k invitational race at the Bronco Invitational in Santa Clara, California.

Region IV Championships Results

We appreciate the coaches, parents, and administrators who helped at the Region IV Cross-Country Championships held yesterday at AFHS.

The boys were Region Champs for the 11th time. Dalton Brems was the individual Region Champion.

The Girls placed second to Lone Peak, advancing to State. Lexi Wright was the individual Region Champion.



The boys JV took the first 10 spots, with Joe Corbridge as individual JV Champion.

Five AF girls placed in the top 10 of the Girls JV Race. Brooklyn Hopkins was individual JV Champion.

American Fork High School will be hosting on Friday, October 6th the Region IV Cross-Country Championships. It is the same 5000m Course as we ran at Pre-Region.

RACES THIS COMING WEEKEND

The Boys Team will be racing this Friday afternoon at the Park City Invitational.

Directions: take the highway up Provo Canyon, through Heber City, and past Jordanelle Reservoir.

Welcome to the 9th annual Park City Invitational. Our course is a 3 mile challenging cross country course on grass and dirt trails. The footing is excellent for most of the course, and you cross pavement only for a few steps. The course is one loop with the finish repeating the start. A very good spectator course and a good tune-up for region and state.
There will be individual medals (top 10) for JV and Varsity, and team trophies (top 2) for both days.

This Week's races

The top girls will be racing in Boise, Idaho at the Bob Firman Invitational on Saturday.
The 5000m course is at Eagle Island State Park. Link to Bob Firman Website, Information on Athletic.net

On Friday, the boys team will be racing at the Nebo Invitational at Maple Mountain High School. The bus will leave AFHS at 2:30 PM. Athletes must ride on the bus in order to compete. parents may take thier athletes home after the team cooldown if Coach Mostert has been notified.

In Memoriam

Former AFHS Cross-Country coach George Ricks passed away this week after a long and valiant battle with cancer. The team will wear a ribbon in his honor this Saturday at the BYU Autumn Classic. He built up the AFHS program in the 80's and 90's to statewide prominence, and coaxed Coach Hunziker into becoming the girls coach 30 years ago.

George Ira Ricks, 66, passed away Sept. 10, 2017 in Salt Lake City. Funeral services will be Saturday Sept. 16, 2017 at 11:30 AM at the Hiilcrest Stake Center 165 North 350 West, American Fork. A viewing will be held Friday, Sept. 15, from 6-8 PM at Anderson & Sons Mortuary 49 East 100 North, American Fork and Saturday at the church from 10-11:15 AM. Wasatch Invite Results

The Boys raced Saturday at the Wasatch Invitational, held at Soldier Hollow. It was a 5k course run on the Olympic Cross-Country Skiing venue from the 2002 Winter Olympics.

The Girls Team will be racing this Friday at the Murray Invitational held at Murray Park (4100 S. State St. in Murray). Parking for the event will be at the Salt Lake County Ice Arena, 5201 S. Rancho Court. (The first left after State Street). The bus will leave AFHS at 1:30 PM. Athletes must ride up on the bus in order to be able to compete. Parents may take their athlete home after team cooldown, if a coach has been notified.

Thanks to all the people from each school who helped in the chute and with the results boards. The results are at this Link. Team scores were not kept. A storm was coming in, so we got strong Northerly winds reminiscent of the winds at last year's NXN-SW Meet. Rain started about 18 minutes into the boys race.

On Wednesday, we will be hosting the Pre-Region IV meet at AFHS. Girls will run at 7:00 PM, and the Boys will run at 7:30 PM.

Westlake Grass Relays

The Cavemen will participate this Saturday at the Westlake Grass Relays. All athletes must ride on the bus to the meet. It will leave AFHS at 6:30 AM. Parents may take their athlete home after their races and team cooldown run.
To get to Westlake High School, take Pioneer Crossing (Main Street in AF) Westbound.  Turn left on Redwood Road, and right at the next light.

Highland Invitational

This Thursday, August 17th, the Girls team is beginning their competitive season at the Highland Invitational. It will be held at Sugarhouse Park (1300 E. 2100 S. in Salt lake City). The Grinder Week #7

We had some guests come and do The Grinder with us this morning. Former team captain Mike Felix brought his boys and girls teams from Westlake High School to run the Grinder. We also had the boys varsity squad from Maria Carillo High School from Santa Rosa, California do the Grinder. They are visiting the team this week and will be training with us through Thursday.
