STATE CHAMPIONS!


Yesterday, both the girls and boys teams won at the UtahState Cross-Country Championships.

The girls team won with 32 points over 2nd place Davis (81) and 3rd place Syracuse (142). They also beat out nationally ranked park City (3A champs) and Mountain View (4A champs) in the combined scoring 85 to 92.5 and 113 . We had 3 All-Staters: Alexis laws was 2nd in 18:55, Morgan Warner was 3rd in 18:56, and Kaijsa Angerhofer was 4th in 19:03. Also scoring were Jamie Lee 11th in 19:25, and Danielle West 13th in 19:30. Lakyn Lux placed 15th in 19:38 and Jasmyn Hildebrandt 43rd in 20:44 to help push the scores of the other teams. This is the first Championship for the girls XC program.

The boys team won with 36 points and set a new course record of 79:32 for their 5 man cumulative time. Pleasant Grove was 2nd with 86 points and Davis 3rd with 109. The boys also won in the combined scoring with a convincing 62.5 points over nationally ranked Mountain View with 151.5 points. The Cavemen were led by Individual State Champion Austin West. He ran a new course Jr. Class Record of 15:23 which is 4th fastest ever and tied Steven Clark's 5A course record. He was followed by All-Staters Clayton Young (4th in a new Soph class record 15:43), and Robby Lee (5th in 15:51). Those were the 3 fastest Cavemen state times ever on the new course . Also scoring were Mack Morrison (13th in 16:10), and Ashenafe Richardson (21st in 16:23). Jeff Nelson was right behind in 23rd place in 16:26, beating the entire squad of 9 of the 15 other teams. Corey Jackson pushed back other team scorers placing 40th in 16:50. This is the boys program's first State Championship after 3 2nd places in the last 5 years. It is also the first championship in any boys sport at AFHS in the last quarter century.

After the meet, the team ate at Chuck-a-rama and then received a fire truck escort through town all the way back to school from the interchange.

This morning, school started off with an award assembly where the teams were honored and presented their Region and State championship trophies to the school. The Drumline and the Cavettes performed for the students. The State Championship banners will be hung in the Gymnasium sometime this week.
