Racing at Sea-Level: There is about a 22 second altitude adjustment for a race at sea-level, so plan your mile splits accordingly. You will be able to breathe! Be in the front half of the blob that first mile; too slow and you won't be able to move into the lead pack during the second mile. Negative splits.

We will be planning a 5K race on the AFHS track on December 5th, so we will keep training through that date. After Thanksgiving, there's a chance we will be able to meet for practice.

Nov. 7th Border Wars Qualifier Race

Just a reminder that the Border Wars Qualifier registration has opened. We are potentially going to have to cap the entries or adjust races so we are COVID compliant so the sooner your athletes register the better then we have a better indication of what to expect and plan for. Best of luck to those competing at State this week and we are excited to see all of you on Nov 7th at Spanish Fork Sports Park.

When they sign up it will give them either a 5k boys option or a 5k girls option. We will pull them into their grade races on the back end so they don't need to worry about that. Coach Mostert will send markham hyde (mhyde@dsdmail.net) our varsity roster when we get a little closer to the event he will then pull them into the varsity/championship race.

State Tickets and Athlete Waiver

  Tickets

Fans are able to get ticket vouchers at https://gofan.co/app/school/UHSAA. Please select vouchers for the specific race you are attending to allow us for accurate contact tracing. Fans will need to present these vouchers at the venue entrance to gain access to the facility and to receive a wristband. All fans will be asked to leave the venue after the races and awards for their classification have concluded.

2. Student-Athlete Waiver Signature

All student-athletes who have been registered in the race will be responsible to have signed a waiver for Soldier Hollow Nordic Center at https://waiver.smartwaiver.com/w/58475c0e6a8f4/web/?auto_tag=FY18XCJRNATS. As a reminder, if your student-athletes or alternates competed at the Wasatch Meet, they do not need to fill out the waiver again. Also, all alternates who may reasonably compete at the 3A-5A-6A event will need to fill out this form.

3. Streaming

The race is scheduled to be streamed on KSL.com. Due to the amount of walking at the venue to reach viewing areas and the colder temperatures forecasted for Thursday, we would advise any populations who struggle with the elements to consider streaming the event if the conditions will have an adverse effect on them.

4. Non-Participants

Soldier Hollow has informed us that we can have 1000 people in the venue at all times, including participants, coaches, spectators and staff. This number is a reasonable number  Only IF teams restrict the numbers of non-participants they bring with them for this event. I am calling upon your school to please help with this potential issue in order to successfully complete the event.

Quite frankly, the risks of going over this limit of approx. 1000 people are high, as is the risk of not having all parties comply with the requirement of wearing masks in the venue. Failure to abide by these limits could lead to the event being recommended to be postponed or cancelled, which would be an absolute disservice to the individuals who have qualified for the competition.

If the meet is in danger, we will call an all-coaches meeting at the venue and ask you to kindly remove any non-participants and take them back to the bus. After that, we will remove spectators if necessary to allow the student-athletes to participate as scheduled. If we are unable to get cooperation, the meet/meets will be moved and rescheduled to another day and site to allow for completion. Thus, your cooperation is much appreciated as we try to fulfill our commitments to safety and completing the race while providing the best experience possible.

We must track all non-qualifiers by contact tracing. We are asking you as a school to cooperate by please having coaches provide a list of all non-participants, along with contact information for them, as they pick up team packets. This will allow us to provide detailed participant involvement to the Wasatch County Health Department. Again, use discretion in your school's decision to bring non-qualifiers.

5. Team Arrival Information

Teams are encouraged to not show up any earlier than 1 hour before the start of their scheduled race time, in order to allow the UHSAA and Soldier Hollow staffs to clear participants from the previous session and to clean the restroom facilities. We will begin allowing teams into the facility approximately 1 hour before the start of your scheduled race times.

State Meet Information

The Utah State Championships will be held Thursday, October 22nd at Soldier Hollow. The Bus will leave AFHS at 1:45 PM. We will only be able to take Varsity Team and alternates  because of spectator limitations. As soon as the UHSAA releases spectator ticket protocol, we'll put it up.

Girls 6A Race: 4:00 PM
Boys 6A Race: 4:30 PM
To ensure COVID-19 risk mitigation takes place, all competitors and coaches are strongly encouraged to be wearing masks immediately after exiting the buses. Additionally, competitors, coaches, officials and staff should be wearing masks as they walk around the facility. Social distancing should be observed in all places where reasonably possible. Competitors should remove their masks only when warming up, in competition, and cooling down. Coaches should prepare to return masks to competitors in the cool-down area. Additionally, programs are encouraged to not bring student-athletes who have not qualified for the races. Online tickets will be required to be purchased for all fans attending the State XC event at Soldier Hollow. The tickets will be available for free through the UHSAA GoFan ticketing portal. All spectators and administrators will be required to show entrance to the Soldier Hollow event. Masks are required at both the Cedar High and Soldier Hollow sites. Classifications are strongly encouraged to vacate as soon as possible after their awards ceremony and to show up no sooner than 60 minutes before their assigned race time. Additionally, hand sanitizing is encouraged in the facility, along with individual water containers for all attendees. Teams are strongly encouraged to not set up team camps and to stay on buses, only leaving to warm-up, race and subsequently cool-down. This will help with mitigation efforts, along with facilitating a timely exit from the facility after awards.

Here's the message from the UHSAA about Covid restrictions:

Good afternoon, UHSAA 3A, 5A, and 6A XC Coaches and School Administrators:

In advance of next week's State XC Championships at Soldier Hollow, there are a variety of things we need to have a frank conversation about. First-and-foremost, Wasatch County and Soldier Hollow have been moved to the highest level of transmission risk in the state, which has caused a delay in the finalization of our ticket protocols. This has caused a delay to the opening of tickets, especially since we are waiting to finalize qualifiers in the classifications.

The plan is to finalize the plan for spectators with Wasatch County and then to open the voucher submission links as soon as possible. Member schools and coaches will be notified of this procedure as soon as it is finalized to meet all of the new restrictions.

Additionally, they have started road construction on the road leading to Soldier Hollow, which can cause slight delays in getting to the facility. Please plan accordingly while exiting your bus/vehicles no earlier than 1 hour before your scheduled race time.

PARENTS, PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING COVID-19 INFORMATION!

All spectators need to park in Vista Middle School South parking lots.  Spectators need to enter by the South West and South East gates to access the back of the school.  They should have pre-purchased their tickets using the codes sent to their school.  EACH spectator will need their OWN ticket.  They will need to be able to show a purchase code for EACH ticket at the gate to enter.

Parents, we need your assistance.  We need to work together to keep our student athletes and coaches safe.   We are excited that our athletes have the opportunity to participate in Region Cross Country. We do not want to jeopardize this opportunity nor the opportunity to attend the State Meet.  The following protocol is necessary to allow spectators and still conduct the Region Meet.  It was developed to provide direction for schools and spectators in accordance with Utah County Health guidelines. For the safety of spectators, athletes, coaches, their families, and the community at large, these guidelines must be followed. Face coverings are required to attend ASD and Region 4 Events. Games may be delayed or suspended for non compliance.

1. Ticketed Events/Spectator Admittance

  • All students, parents and non-team members will need a ticket to enter.

  • Spectators will not be allowed access to areas designated as “Team Members Only”.  This includes most of the field area west of the school.

  • Spectators will need to park at Vista Middle School and enter the north fields by Vista Middle School.  Field access provides spectators 2 opportunities to cheer for their team for each lap.  Bathrooms will not be available.

  • All ticket purchases must be done in advance via electronic (VNN) touchless system. Same day ticketing will NOT be sold at the gate at the event.  Access codes for VNN will be sent to schools.

A spectator agreement form is required for spectators who must agree to it before an individual can get tickets.   Tickets are free, but everyone needs a ticket from VNN.

WE ARE LIMITED TO 2 TICKETS PER FAMILY. TICKETS CAN BE OBTAINED AT thunderathletics.org
Your athlete will receive the password today at practice.
