College Recruiting Meeting, Jan. 23rd

Dear Parentsl,

As a reminder, I will be presenting the nationally acclaimed "College Recruiting Simplified", sponsored by the NFL Players Association and ESPNrise, official partners of NCSA to the American Fork High School athletes and their parents Monday night, January 23rd at 7:00pm. Cole Kelley has reserved the auditorium for this event.

Some of you may know my story as I am local to Utah. I travel the country speaking at major Nike, Under Armour and ESPN events to share my personal story and expert advise on the college recruiting process. I also now speak at 70 high schools each year in Utah. The one hour event will be dedicated to educating your athletes, of all ability levels, and their parents on the simple to complex things they need to know and do to increase their opportunity to play sports in college and more importantly help fund their education. Admission is free and sponsored by the NFL-PA and ESPNrise. Each athlete will receive free online tools, search maps and one academic/athletic analysis with a National Scout.

I would appreciate it if each of you would inform and remind any student/athlete and their parents, who play sports at American Fork High School about this event. I have also attached a PDF flyer of the event and hope that each of you can email this to the parents and boosters.

I have found, in my experience, that the key to a well attended event is the coach. Please encourage your athletes to attend with their families. As you know, kids need to be reminded often. I focus mainly on academics, character, and dedication to one's sport and team (the 3 most important things a college coach looks for).

NXN Southwest Regionals

Today the Cavemen punched their airline tickets the the Nike Cross Nationals in two weeks by winning their third straight Southwest Regional Championships at Toka Sticks Golf Course in Mesa, Arizona.
We had an awesome race - winning with 45 points and a course record 77:42 cumulative time.

We had three first team all-region placers in Clayton Young (3rd in 15:14), Brayden McLelland (4th in 15:21), and Mack Morrison (7th in 15:27).

Third team all-region were Connor McMillan (19th in 15:49 - also 2nd fastest Sophomore), and Tyson Green (20th in 15:49).

Zac Jacklin earned race top-freshman honors (63rd in 16:14), while Dallas Griswold placed 74th in 16:21.

NCAA Mountain Region Championships

Several alumni raced to day at Eastbay Golf Course in Provo at the NCAA Mountain Region Cross-Country Championships. We had a great group of current Cavemen there to cheer them on!

Austin West ('11) placed 42nd overall for SUU, helping them to a 5th place team finish. Austin ran 31:46 on the 10,000 meter course. He was the 5th fastest Freshman in the race.

Austin's sister, Danielle West ('10), placed 78th overall in the women's 6000 meter race. Her time of 23:13 helped the SUU Thunderbirds place 11th in the Women's race.

Mike Felix ('05) placed 87th in 33:25 to help the Utah Valley University Wolverines take 14th in the Men's team race.

Utah State Championships

What an exciting day!
First up were the girls who placed fifth with 136 points. Their team time of 101:13 was 5th best on the AF all-time list.

Competitors for the Lady Cavemen were:

Everyone except Jamie and Taylir will return next year.

The boys took off at 4 PM. Literally.
The Cavemen picked up their third straight 5A crown, scoring 25 points to 33 for Davis. Cavemen and Darts took 10 of the top 12 places. The Cavemen ran a team time of 78:17, #2 all-time behind our 78:01 record from last year. Davis' team time was #3 all-time.

It was an Epic dual meet battle between the two nationally ranked teams.

Mack Morrison set the 5A record of 15:22.4, passing Brad Nye of Davis in the last 25 meters.
Clayton Young placed 3rd in 15:31, with Brayden McLellend right behind him in 15:33. Davis' Brayden Cromar came in 5th, followed by our friend Haven Shelton from PG. Connor McMillan took 7th, passing about 6 guys in the last mile.His time of 15:47 just missed Clayton's 5A Soph record by 4 seconds. He was followed 3 more Davis boys in 8th-Preston Johnson, 10th-Logan Wood, and 11th-Skylar Williams. Tyson Green took 12th in 16:03 to finish the scoring. Zac Jacklin placed 15th in 16:09, which set a new 5A Frosh record by 4 seconds. Dallas Griswold placed 35th in 16:50. The boys' times ended up 1st, 5th, 7th, 9th, 16th, and 19th on the all-time Caveman list.

We'd like to thank all the students, parents, alumni, and fans for coming to Sugarhouse Park to support the team. We would also like to thank the AF Fire Department for the fire engine escort through town on the way back to school. That was AWESOME!

Region IV Championships

Today at Cottonwood Complex, both boys and girls teams qualified for the State Championships.

The girls varsity team placed second to Lehi 31-61. Jamie Lee (7th), and Diane Leach (10th) were All-Region.

The Girls JV won JV Region with 20 points.

The boys varsity team won their 5th straight region title with 18 points. Second place was Bingham at 81.
All-Region were Mack Morrison (1st), Clayton Young (2nd), Brayden McLellend (3rd), Tyson Green (4th), Connor McMillan (8th), and Zac Jacklin (9th).

The boys JV took the top 6 places to win JV region with 15 points.

Running The Edge

Friends of Caveman Cross-Country, Olympian Adam Goucher and Teacher and Coach Tim Catalano, have written a book called "Running The Edge". It is about striving for excellence in both running and in life. Copies of the book can be purchased from their website: Run The Edge.

Tim and Adam have announced that for every book sold on their website between now and October 5th, Run the Edge will donate $3.00 to Runners with a Reason, a non-profit charity started by Britt Ehlers and his wife to raise money to remove the reasons people find not to run. Britt's first thought was to provide shoes to addicts who wanted to use running to fight their addictions. This idea got the ball rolling and soon Runners with a Reason was helping runners in a variety of ways. They have collected over 1000 shoes for One World Running , provide support and scholarships for the Girls on the Run program, and created a winter running club for students at low income schools in their area. In the first year of that program, 3 kids finished the Lincoln half marathon and earned $250 scholarships for college. It is not much but a gentle push in the right direction can have a tremendous trans-formative influence on a young person’s life.

The bus will leave AFHS at 7:00 AM. Athletes must ride on the bus to participate, but parents can take their athlete home, if they first tell a coach.

Today at the UC-Riverside Invite, Austin West helped Southern Utah University win the men's team championship out of 25 teams. He placed 12th overall out of 242 runners with an 8k (5 mile) time of 24:20.5.
Danny Keller also competed for the T'Birds, placing 104th in 26:00.8.

Danielle West placed 79th out of 167 runners in the Women's race at the UC-Riverside Invite for the T'Birds in a time of 22:32.7 for 6k (3.7 miles). The team finished 3rd with 87 points, just behind Loyola Marymount (65) and UC-Santa Barbara (69).

Last night the girls team and the boys JV ran at Lakeside Sports Park in Orem at the Utah County Invite hosted by Timpanogos High School. The course was 3 miles of grass and very flat and fast.

Kaden Springer, Zac Jacklin, and Connor Hoopes placed 1st, 2nd, and 9th, respectively, in the Boys Fros/Soph Race.

Emily Orton and Diane Leach placed 3rd and 5th, respectively, in the Girls Frosh/Soph Race.

The Girls Team placed 7th overall out of 14 teams.

The Boys JV Team placed 9th overall out of 17 Varsity teams.

The boys will be meeting Monday at AFHS at 2:00 PM for practice.
The girls are to run 6 miles on their own, or meet with a friend to run.

No team scores were kept, but the Boys Team went 1,2,3,4,6,8,9,11,14.

The Cavemen will be racing this week twice:

Wednesday, the Cavemen have the Region IV pre-region race At Cottonwood Complex in Holladay.
Take I-15 North, then the 4500 S. exit to the East. Make a left at 1100 East to the parking lot at 4200. S.

The bus will leave AFHS at 5:00 PM. All athletes must ride to the meet on the bus or they can't race (district policy). Parents can take their athletes home after their cooldown (just tell a coach first).

Grass Relays

We would like to thank all the parents who helped put on the Grass Relays: hauling hay, working the chute and results boards, manning registration and concessions, and cheering on our Cavemen!

The boys won for the third straight year, and with the 2nd fastest relay time ever!

Clayton was the fastest leg of the day with a 10:01 (4th all-time).
Mack placed 4th in 10:20 (21st all-time).
Brayden placed 7th in 10:31.

The Girls placed 10th out of 26 teams in the Girls Varsity relay.
Rookie Emily Orton, in her first XC race ever, ran the fastest leg with a 13:05.

Miranda Graves placed 5th in 13:20 in the Girls Frosh/Soph JV Race for a medal.

Conner McMillan led the Cavemen to the first four places in the Boys Frosh/Soph JV Race, winning in 10:40. He was followed by Kaden Springer (10:51), Zach Jacklin (10:52), and Caleb Thompson (10:59).

Hunter Wilson was the first Caveman finisher in the Jr/.Sr. JV race in 12th place (11:14), while Ashley Larsen was our first finisher in the Girls Jr./Sr. JV Race in 39th place (14:35).

Congratulations to Kaden Springer. He broke the 9 minute mark for the first time up the Grinder this morning with a clocking of 8:54 to earn his Grinder t-shirt.

Coach Lindsey Dunkley set an all-time women's record of 9:17 up the Grinder this morning.

The boys Varsity took the week off from the Grinder to run from AFHS up to Battlecreek Falls for a 10-miler.

Bridal Veil Falls

We met this morning and ran an 8-miler to Bridal Veil Falls in Provo Canyon.
There was an early morning canyon wind, but it kept everybody cool on the way up and back .

Reminder #1: Tomorrow we are meeting at 5:00 AM to go work at the mile 3 aid station at the Mt. Timpanogos Half-Marathon. Wear your running clothes and bring a jacket.

Reminder #2: Monday is the beginning of official practice (two-a-days for boys). Make sure you have handed in your physical form and tryout checklist.

High Altitude Camp

This week we had high altutude camp at Timpooneke. We had our largest camp ever with over 50 people. We arrived Tuesday afternoon and went for a run up to Scout Falls. There was still snow up around the area.

Tuesday night we gathered around the campfire for team introductions and games.

Clayton won the Chubby Bunny contest with 18.

On Wednesday morning, we ran from Tibble Fork Reservoir towards Cascade Springs, then jumped in the reservoir to cool down.

That afternoon we took a run on the Great Western Trail up to Salamander Flats.
On Wednesday night we enjoyed Caveman Stew, and then the team captains went over our season goals.

Stewart Falls

Friday, the team ran the Stewart Falls loop on the back side of Mt. Timpanogos. There was 15 ft. of snow at the falls, and the creek had dug a tunnel through it.

Several of the bolder, older athletes got under the falls.We had a very fun time, with just a few crash-and-burns on the way down the trail.

NXN Results

The boys raced really hard through the mud and ended up placing 8th at the Seventh Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Oregon. The Cavemen scored 195 points , which would have been enough to win last year. Derek Day was the top placer at 38th (15th team) followed by Nafe Richardson at 66th (30th), Mack Morrison at 79th (39th), Clayton Young at 96th (55th), Austin West at 98th (56th), Kevin Judd at 151st (106th), and Danny Keller at 177th (132nd).

Cavemen Prevail

This morning, our Cavemen won the NXN Southwest Championships with 44 points to 88 points for Ft. Collins, Co. and 93 points for Davis, Ut.
The win qualifies the boys to race in two weeks at the Nike Cross Nationals in Eugene, Oregon.
This is the second year in the row the Cavemen have won Regionals. Last year they ended up 8th place at NXN.
The race was a flat and fast 5000 meters at Toka Sticks Golf Course in Mesa, Arizona.
We had 5 All-Region athletes.

On the SW Region First Team were Clayton Young, 5th in 15:28.1 and Nafe Richardson, 6th in 15:30.2.
Second Team was Mack Morrison, 13th in 15:41.8.
Third Team were Derek Day, 18th in 15:45.5 and Austin West, 20th in 15:49.3.
Danny Keller (112th in 16:33.4) and Kevin Judd (145th in 16:52.8) also ran for the Cavemen.

Pre-Footlocker Invite

This Saturday is the Pre-Footlocker race hosted by the UHSTCA at AFHS. Registration is $3 per runner with the girls racing at 8:30 AM and the boys at 9:00 AM. The course is 5000m and consists of 3 loops on the Grass Relays course and finishing the last .1 on the track.

Several Caveman alumni participated in their college conference championships yesterday and today:

Danielle West placed 13th in 21:55 for 6k at the Summit League meet for the 2nd place SUU.
Robby Lee placed 34th in 26:29 for 8 k at the Summit League meet for the 5th place SUU.
Mike Felix placed 41st in 26:04 for 8k at the Great West Conf. meet for Champion UVU
Alexis Laws placed 28th in 23:20 for 8k at the Mountain West Conf. meet for 5th place Utah.

Fall Sports Assembly

This morning, the Boys and Girls Cross-Country Teams were honored at our Fall Sports Assembly.
Acedemic All-Region honors were presented to Kevin Judd, Tyson Green, Clayton Young, Kaijsa Angerhofer, Lakyn Lux, and Morgan Warner.

The Girls' Team was recognized for their third place finish at the Utah State Championships, and Jasmyn Hildebrandt(6th) and Jamie Lee(8th) were recognized for their All-State Awards.

The Boys' Team was recognized for thier State Championship and they presented their State Trophy to the school. The boys were recognized for their state placings: Clayton Young - individual state champion, Mack Morrison - individual state runner-up, Nafe Richardson(4th), Austin West (6th), and Derk Day (8th), Daniel Keller (13th), and Kevin Judd (17th). They were also recognized for setting a State Course Record of 78:01; a record by 91 seconds over the record our Cavemen set last year.

Coach Mostert then unveiled the new State Championship banner.

The athletes on the J.V. squads were also recognized for the the hard work and effort they had put into the season. We are grateful for all the parents, administration, faculty, community members, and student body who support our team. I have never seen as many students in our school interested in how our team is doing as there have been this year, and I hope it only helps build our program even more.

Utah State Championships

The Girls took Third and the Boys 1st at State today.

Jasmyn Hildebrandt(6th) and Jamie Lee(8th) earned All-State honors for the girls. They were followed by Lakyn Lux(13th), Diane Leach(43rd), Makayla Bernardo(55th), Taylir Garrison(75th), and Kylie Buckwalter (79th).

The boys won with an astounding 21 points and a State Record 78:01 five-man cumulative time.
Clayton Young was our second straight individual State Champion. Also earning All-State were Mack Morrison(2nd), Ashenafe Richardson(4th), Austin West(6th), and Derek Day(8th). They were followed by Danny Keller(13th), and Kevin Judd(17th).

American Fork moved up one place to 2nd in their national rankings behind Arcadia, Ca.
Davis moved up to #7 and Pine View #17
We are still ranked #1 in the Southwest Region.
